CHAPTER TWELVE

Chris shifted nervously in his seat as they finished one of the best meals he'd ever had. The food was amazing, and the environment, well, it was a place he couldn't see himself ever working. It was a very high-class restaurant. Jay had been right to force him to buy nicer clothes.

"Do you want dessert?" Jay leaned back in his chair.

"No, I'm so full. I think I've eaten more the last few days than I have in my life." Chris looked across the table at the man who was turning his life upside down. Jay was amazing, and he could almost imagine that as they sat there, they were a couple. He wasn't just some loser who was trying to get off the street. Jay made him feel normal, treated him normal.

Even when Chris had fumbled, trying to figure out what silverware to use, Jay had picked up his own, meeting Chris's gaze in a silent communication to just follow his lead. He made everything seem so simple.

Chris spent the meal watching the staff at the restaurant. He couldn't see himself comfortable enough to ever be a waiter. He was glad he'd be hidden in the back away from everyone.

"Think you'll like it here?"

"I don't know. I might be better at a place like McDonalds."

"Nah, this is more your type of place. It will pay much better too. It's just another new thing. Once you get used to it… Well, you might not like it, but if you don't, then you find another job. Sooner or later, you will find what you want to do. This is just a start."

It was hard to think about the future. It was hard enough just getting through day to day. "What if the owner doesn't like me?"

Jay glanced toward a table to the back of the restaurant. "See the guy in the gray suit? Dark hair, the green tie? He owns the place. His name is Trevor. He's a chef, but he spends most his time running this place. His father is big in politics. He comes from money, but you'd never know it talking to Trevor. He's as easy going as they come."

"You know him?" Chris adverted his eyes when Trevor looked over at them.

"Not well. We've met at different events. He's a bit of a playboy. Goes out clubbing a lot. I know it pisses his father off, but Trevor doesn't seem to care. I've never seen him with the same guy twice."

"He's gay?" Chris wouldn't have guessed that. Trying to forget about his maybe to be new boss, he looked back at Jay. "I only know of one gay club. It's kinda trashy. I can't believe he would go there."

"There are several clubs in the area. Not all are gay, but they are gay friendly. I personally like to go this one just down the road from here. It's a gay club, but it's quieter than most. When I dance, I like to enjoy it, not deal with everyone bumping into each other and inhaling everyone sweat.
